1. CHECK ILLUMINATION DURATION OF GLOW INDICATOR LIGHT

  1. Check the light illumination duration.

    A113412E01

    1. Turn the ignition switch ON, and then measure the light illumination duration.

      Light illumination duration:
      See graph.

    2. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

      1. If the result is not as specified, inspect the ECM, ECT sensor, glow plug and GLOW relay.

      HINT:
Actual light illumination duration may vary slightly from the graph.

2. CHECK PRE-HEATING

  1. Inspect the pre-heating time.

    A111826E02

    1. Turn the ignition switch ON. Measure how long it takes for battery voltage to be applied to the glow plugs.

      Standard time:
      Engine Coolant Temperature
      pre-heating Time
      40 °C (104 °F) or higher
      1 second
      Less than 40 °C (104 °F)
      See graph
      (maximum: 15 seconds)

    2. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

      1. If the result is not as specified, inspect the ECM, ECT sensor, glow plug and GLOW relay.

  1. Turn the ignition switch to START. Check that battery voltage is applied to the glow plugs.

  1. While cranking the engine, measure how long it takes for battery voltage to be applied to the glow plugs.

    Standard time:
    Engine Coolant Temperature
    pre-heating Time
    40 °C (104 °F) or higher
    1 second
    Less than 40 °C (104 °F)
    See graph
    (maximum: 15 seconds)

    1. If the result is not as specified, inspect the ECM, ECT sensor, glow plug and GLOW relay.

3. CHECK AFTERGLOW TIME

  1. Check the afterglow time.

    A113414E01

    1. After the engine starts, measure how long it takes for battery voltage to be applied to terminals E5-15 (GREL) and E7-7 (E1) of the ECM.

      Standard time:
      Tester Connection
      Specified Condition
      E5-15 (GREL) - E7-7 (E1)
      See graph

      1. If the result is not as specified, inspect the ECM, ECT sensor, glow plug and GLOW relay.
