REAR AXLE SHAFT > REMOVAL

HINT:
  1. Use the same procedures for the RH and LH side.
  2. The procedures listed below are for the LH side.



1. REMOVE REAR WHEEL


2. REMOVE BRAKE DRUM


3. REMOVE REAR SPEED SENSOR LH (w/ ABS)

  1. Disconnect the sensor connector.

  1. Remove the bolt and sensor.

    NOTICE:
    Keep the sensor tip and sensor installation hole free from foreign matter.



4. REMOVE REAR BRAKE SHOE (for 2WD)

  1. Remove the rear brake shoe (Click here).



5. REMOVE REAR BRAKE SHOE (for 4WD)

  1. Remove the rear brake shoe (Click here).



6. DISCONNECT BRAKE LINE AND PARKING BRAKE CABLE

  1. Using SST, disconnect the brake line from the wheel cylinder.

  1. Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the parking brake cable.



7. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT WITH BACKING PLATE

  1. Remove the 4 backing plate mounting nuts.

  1. Pull out the axle shaft from the axle housing.

    NOTICE:
    Be careful not to damage the oil seal.



8. REMOVE O-RING FROM REAR AXLE HOUSING


9. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT OIL SEAL

  1. Using SST, tap out the oil seal.

10. REMOVE REAR AXLE BEARING INNER RETAINER AND (W/ ABS) ABS SPEED SENSOR ROTOR

  1. Attach 4 nuts to the serration bolts and remove the 4 serration bolts from the backing plate using a hammer.

    NOTICE:
    Do not use any of the vehicle's nuts for this procedure.

  1. Using a snap ring expander, remove the snap ring.

  1. Grind the retainer(s) and sensor rotor surfaces using a grinder, and then pry them out with a chisel and hammer.

  1. Attach washers and nuts to the serration bolts, and then torque the nuts to install the serration bolts to the backing plate.

  1. Remove the 4 nuts and washers from the serration bolts.



11. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT

  1. Position SST on the backing plate with the 4 nuts.

  1. Using a press, press out the axle shaft and bearing retainer from the backing plate.

  1. Remove SST.



12. REMOVE REAR AXLE HUB BOLT

  1. Using SST, remove the hub bolt, oil deflector and gasket.

13. INSPECT REAR AXLE SHAFT LH

  1. Using a dial indicator, measure the rear axle shaft shaft runout.

    Maximum runout:
    Item
    		Specified Condition
    Shaft runout
    		1.5 mm (0.0591 in.)
    Flange runout
    		0.05 mm (0.0020 in.)

    If the rear axle shaft or flange are damaged or worn, or if the runout is greater than the maximum, replace the rear axle shaft.



14. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT OUTER OIL SEAL

  1. Using SST, tap out the dust seal.

15. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT BEARING

  1. Using SST and a press, press out the bearing.
