DESCRIPTION

The Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) is composed of the throttle actuator, throttle position sensor, the accelerator pedal position sensor, and ECM.
This system is a one valve type throttle body.
In order to provide the proper opening angle of the throttle valve in response to the driving condition, the throttle position sensor mounted on the throttle body detects the actual throttle valve opening angle. Then the sensor provides feedback to the ECM so that the ECM can control the actuator.
If the ETCS has a malfunction, the ECM shuts down the power for the actuator, and the throttle valve is locked at a certain angle by the return spring. Also, all electronically controlled throttle operations are canceled until the system returns to normal and the ignition switch is turned OFF.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The ECM determines the "actual" throttle angle based on the throttle position sensor signal. The "actual" throttle position is compared to the "target" throttle position commanded by the ECM. If the difference of these two values exceeds a specified limit, the ECM interprets this as a fault in the ETCS system. The ECM turns on the MIL and sets a DTC.
Start the engine, fully depress the accelerator pedal until the engine reaches 5,000 rpm (to fully open the throttle valve), and quickly release the accelerator pedal (to close the throttle valve).

FAIL-SAFE

If the ETCS is malfunctioning, the ECM cuts off the current to the throttle actuator. The throttle control valve returns to a predetermined throttle position (approximately 16°) by the force of the return spring.
Then, required engine power is calculated using the ignition timing and accelerator pedal position. The engine is controlled by intermittent fuel-cut.
If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and slowly, the vehicle can be driven at minimum speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed quickly, the vehicle may speed up and slow down erratically.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT:
Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine conditions when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

1.CHECK OTHER DTC OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P2119/89)
  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the intelligent tester ON.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  1. Read DTCs.

    Result:
    Display (DTC Output)

    P2119/89 and other DTCs

    HINT:
    If any other DTCs besides P2119/89 are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.

2.CHECK IF DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P2119/89)
  1. Clear the DTCs (Click here).

  1. Allow the engine to idle for 15 seconds.

  1. Securely apply the parking brake, and move the shift lever to the D position.

  1. Depress the brake pedal securely and the accelerator pedal fully for 5 seconds.

    CAUTION:
    It is extremely important to confirm that the parking brake is properly applied and that the brake pedal is firmly depressed, Failure to do so may lead to a hazardous situation if the vehicle moves.

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.

  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON and turn the intelligent tester ON.

  1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  1. Read DTCs.

    OK:
    No DTC output.
