POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS) > Basic Diagnostic Procedure 
PROCEDURE

1. PERFORM CUSTOMER INTERVIEW.

Ask the customer when and how the trouble occurred using the interview check list. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Check List for Interview

Perform the interview, and 2

2. INITIALIZATION OF POWER REAR GATE SYSTEM.
1.

Open the power rear gate manually.

2.

Manually close the power rear gate to the partially latched position, and operate the auto closer to fully close the power rear gate.

3.

Use any power rear gate operation switch to activate the power rear gate auto operation.

Is the initialization operation possible?

3. PERFORM BASIC INSPECTION.

Is the check result OK?

Repair the faulty part found in basic inspection, and 4

4. CHECK SUBARU SELECT MONITOR COMMUNICATION.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Connect the Subaru Select Monitor to data link connector. COMMON(diag)>Data Link Connector

3.

Turn the ignition switch to ON and run the Subaru Select Monitor.

4.

Select [Power Rear Gate].

Is communication possible?

5. CHECK DTC.

Read the DTC of [Power Rear Gate] using the Subaru Select Monitor. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

Are any DTCs displayed? (Current malfunction)

Record the DTC, time stamp and freeze frame data, and 6

6. PERFORM DIAGNOSIS.
1.

Perform the diagnosis according to the DTC. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)>LIST

2.

Repair or replace the cause of trouble.

3.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, perform the clear memory of [Power Rear Gate]. COMMON(diag)>Clear memory

4.

Read the DTC of [Power Rear Gate] using the Subaru Select Monitor. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

Are any DTCs displayed? (Current malfunction)

Repeat 6 until DTC is not shown.

Finish the diagnosis.

7. CHECK DIAGNOSTICS WITH PHENOMENON.

Check “Diagnostics with Phenomenon”. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostics with Phenomenon

Is there a corresponding symptom in the Diagnostics with Phenomenon?

If the communication with the body integrated unit is not possible either, refer to LAN SYSTEM (DIAGNOSTICS). LAN SYSTEM (DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Procedure for Subaru Select Monitor Communication

1. CHECK FUSE.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Check the fuse.

Is the check result OK?

Replace the fuse. If the replaced fuse blows out easily, repair the ground short circuit in the harness between the battery and Power rear gate CM.

2. CHECK POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT (OPEN).
1.

Disconnect the Power rear gate CM connector in the order of (R423) → (R422).

2.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

3.

Using a tester, measure the voltage between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

Is the voltage 10 V or more?

Repair the open circuit of the harness between Power rear gate CM connector and the fuse.

3. CHECK GROUND CIRCUIT (OPEN).
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Using a tester, measure the resistance between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

Is the resistance less than 1 Ω?

Repair the open circuit in harness between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

4. CHECK BODY INTEGRATED UNIT.

Is the check result OK?

Perform the inspection according to the diagnosis for body control system.

5. CHECK SUBARU SELECT MONITOR.
1.

Connect the Subaru Select Monitor to another vehicle.

2.

Check whether the communication for initializing can be executed normally.

Is communication normal?

Repair or replace the Subaru Select Monitor.

6. CHECK Power rear gate CM.
1.

Connect the Power rear gate CM connector in the order of (R422) → (R423).

2.

Communicate with [Power Rear Gate] using the Subaru Select Monitor.

Is communication possible?

  • The circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

     

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

  • Communication with Power rear gate CM and Subaru Select Monitor takes time. It takes time to show all the items, and the status cannot be reflected on the display. Therefore, select items only that need to be checked or up to two to three items, when checking the status. (When displaying selected items only, place a check mark for the item to be displayed and press the “Select” button.)

1. CHECK AUTO OPERATION.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Using operation switch, perform power rear gate auto open/close operation from full close position or full open position.

Is auto operation activated?

  • Even if DTC is displayed, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

  •  

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

2. CHECK DTC.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

2.

Read the DTC of [Power Rear Gate] using the Subaru Select Monitor. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

Is DTC B2500 displayed? (Current malfunction)

  • Even if DTC is displayed, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

  •  

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

3. CHECK FUSE.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

Is the check result OK?

Replace the defective fuse. When the replaced fuse is blown immediately, repair the short circuit.

4. CHECK HARNESS.
1.

Disconnect the Power rear gate CM connector (R423).

2.

Using a tester, measure the voltage between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

Using a tester, measure the resistance between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

DTC B2506 PRG MOTOR CURRENT SURGE

DTC detecting condition:

When excessive load is applied to the power rear gate motor, and overcurrent is detected.

Trouble symptom:

The power rear gate auto-operation does not function, operation speed is slow, and incorrect reverse operation occurs.

1. CHECK FOR OBSTACLES.

Check that the peripheral area of the rear gate is free from snow or any object that blocks open/close operation.

When confirming the data monitor, display only one item to be checked at a time. When the displayed items are too many, changes in the pulses will not be retrieved.

Does the value show 0 pulses when fully closed? Does the value show approximately 2000 pulses when fully open?

  • Even if DTC is displayed, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

  •

1. CHECK DTC.
1.

Fully open the rear gate.

2.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

3.

Wait for five seconds or more.

4.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

5.

Wait for five seconds or more.

6.

Read the DTC of [Power Rear Gate] using the Subaru Select Monitor. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

Is DTC B2514 displayed? (Current malfunction)

  • Even if DTC is displayed, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

  •  

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

2. CHECK DATA MONITOR.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data Monitor] of [Power Rear Gate]. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • Ignition Signal

  • IGN SW

 

When confirming the data monitor, display only two items to be checked at a time.

When the ignition switch is turned to ON/OFF, are these two data synchronized?

When [Ignition Signal] is not synchronized: 4

When [IGN SW] is not synchronized: 8

3. CHECK CONNECTOR.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Disconnect the Power rear gate CM connector in the order of (R423) → (R422).

Is there poor contact of connector?

Repair or replace the poor contact of connector.

  • Even if DTC is displayed, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

  •  

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

4. CHECK DATA MONITOR.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data Monitor] of [Body Control]. BODY CONTROL(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • IGN voltage

When the ignition switch is turned to ON/OFF, does the value change? (10 — 15 V when ON)

5. CHECK HARNESS (OPEN CIRCUIT).
1.

Disconnect the Power rear gate CM connector in the order of (R423) → (R422).

2.

Disconnect the body integrated unit connector.

3.

Measure the resistance between Power rear gate CM connector and body integrated unit.

Connector & terminal

(i81) No. 18 — (R422) No. 14:

Is the resistance less than 10 Ω?

Repair or replace the open circuit of harness.

6. CHECK HARNESS (GROUND SHORT CIRCUIT).

Measure the resistance between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

Connector & terminal

(R422) No. 14 — Chassis ground:

Is the resistance 1 MΩ or more?

Repair or replace the short circuit of the harness.

7. CHECK HARNESS (SHORT CIRCUIT IN LIN COMMUNICATION LINE).
1.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

2.

Measure the voltage between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

Connector & terminal

(R422) No. 14 (+) — Chassis ground (−):

Is the voltage less than 1 V?

Repair or replace the short circuit of the harness.

8. CHECK HARNESS.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

2.

Measure the voltage between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

Connector & terminal

(R422) No. 16 (+) — Chassis ground (−):

Is the voltage 9 V or more?

Repair or replace the open circuit of harness.

9. CHECK CONNECTOR.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Disconnect the Power rear gate CM connector in the order of (R423) → (R422).

Is there poor contact of connector?

Repair or replace the poor contact of connector.

  • SECTOR SW

Is [SECTOR SW] ON?

  • Even if DTC is displayed, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

  •  

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

2. CHECK SECTOR SW.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Disconnect the power rear gate CM connectors in the order of (R423) → (R422).

3.

Disconnect the power rear gate auto closer connector.

Is the check result OK?

Replace the power rear gate auto closer. POWER REAR GATE SYSTEM>Power Rear Gate Auto Closer

3. CHECK HARNESS (GROUND SHORT CIRCUIT).

Measure the resistance between power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

Is the resistance 1 MΩ or more?

Repair or replace the short circuit of the harness.

4. CHECK POWER REAR GATE CM (OPEN).

Measure the resistance between power rear gate CM connector and power rear gate auto closer connector.

1. CHECK AUTO OPERATION.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Using operation switch, perform power rear gate auto open/close operation from full close position or full open position.

Is auto operation activated?

  • Even if DTC is displayed, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

  •  

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

2. CHECK DTC.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

2.

Read the DTC of [Power Rear Gate] using the Subaru Select Monitor. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

Is DTC B2519 displayed? (Current malfunction)

  • Even if DTC is displayed, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

  •  

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

3. CHECK FUSE.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

Is the check result OK?

4

Replace the defective fuse. When the fuse is blown immediately, repair the short circuit.

4. CHECK HARNESS.
1.

Disconnect the Power rear gate CM connector (R423).

2.

Using a tester, measure the voltage between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

Connector & terminal

(R423) No. 1 (+) — Chassis ground (−):

Is the voltage 9 V or more?

Repair or replace the open circuit of harness.

5. CHECK HARNESS (OPEN CIRCUIT).

Using a tester, measure the resistance between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

Is the resistance less than 10 Ω?

Repair or replace the open circuit of harness.

6. CHECK CONNECTOR.

Check the Power rear gate CM connector (R423).

3. CHECK HARNESS (OPEN CIRCUIT).
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Disconnect the body integrated unit connector.

3.

Disconnect the Power rear gate CM connector in the order of (R423) → (R422).

4.

Measure the resistance between the body integrated unit connector and Power rear gate CM connector.

Is the resistance less than 10 Ω?

Repair or replace the open circuit of harness.

2. CHECK AUTO OPERATION.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

From full close position or full open position, press and hold the power rear gate driver’s switch to open/close the power rear gate.

Does the buzzer sound during the auto operation?

System is normal.

3. CHECK FUNCTION.
1.

From the full open position, push the rear gate inner switch to perform the power rear gate auto close operation.

2.

During the power rear gate auto close operation, press the sensor unit of the touch sensor to perform the reverse operation.

 

During the power rear gate reverse operation, beeping sound (warning sound) is made.

Does the buzzer sound?

System is normal.

4. CHECK DATA MONITOR.
1.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data Monitor] of [Power Rear Gate]. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • BUZZER

2.

From the full open position, push the rear gate inner switch to perform the power rear gate auto close operation.

3.

During the power rear gate auto close operation, press the sensor unit of the touch sensor to perform the reverse operation.

Is the change of ON ←→ OFF detected?

5. CHECK HARNESS.
1.

Disconnect the power rear gate buzzer connector.

2.

Using an oscilloscope, measure the voltage between power rear gate buzzer connector and chassis ground.

3.

From the full open position, push the rear gate inner switch to perform the power rear gate auto close operation.

4.

During the power rear gate auto close operation, press the sensor unit of the touch sensor to perform the reverse operation.

Connector & terminal

(D152) No. 1 (+) — Chassis ground (−):

Does the voltage waveform temporarily change between ON and OFF during the power rear gate reverse operation?

6. CHECK HARNESS (OPEN CIRCUIT).
1.

Disconnect the Power rear gate CM connector in the order of (R423) → (R424).

2.

Measure the resistance between Power rear gate CM connector and power rear gate buzzer connector.

Is the resistance less than 10 Ω?

Repair or replace the open circuit of harness.

Is the check result OK?

Repair it according to each inspection.

8. OPERATION FROM KEYLESS/KEYLESS ACCESS MOBILE KEY IS NOT POSSIBLE

9. POWER REAR GATE DOES NOT OPERATE
 

When confirming the data monitor, display only the affected items to be checked. When the display items are too many, changes in the signals will not be reflected.

1. CHECK VEHICLE SPEED.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

2.

Is the reading 0 km/h?

2. CHECK PARKING CONDITION.

Does [P range SW] indicate [ON] when the shift lever is in P position?

3. CHECK R/G OPEN PERMISSION CONDITIONS.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data Monitor] of [Power Rear Gate]. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • R/G Open Authorized State

Does the display show as described below at vehicle locked/unlocked state?

  • When the vehicle is in locked state: No permission

  • When the vehicle is in unlocked state: Permission

Check the body integrated unit BODY CONTROL(DIAGNOSTICS)>Basic Diagnostic Procedure, and if no fault is found, replace the Power rear gate CM. POWER REAR GATE SYSTEM>Power Rear Gate Control Module

4. CHECK Auto Start Stop STATUS.

Is [Idle Stop Uncontrol] displayed while not controlling the Auto Start Stop?

5. CHECK TOUCH SENSOR CONDITIONS.

Does the display change as ON ←→ OFF along with the ON/OFF operation of the touch sensor?

    • SECTOR SW: ON

7. CHECK POWER SUPPLY FOR Power rear gate CM.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data Monitor] of [Power Rear Gate]. POWER REAR GATE(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • + B

Is the voltage 9 — 16 V?

8. CHECK SW INPUT.

From a rear gate fully closed or fully open state, perform auto operation using the following operation switches.

  • Power rear gate driver’s switch

  • Rear gate opener button

  • Power rear gate inner switch

  • Rear gate / trunk SW (keyless transmitter or access key)

Is the check result OK?

Currently, system is normal. Operation conditions are not met temporarily.

10. THE REAR GATE DOES NOT HOLD AT THE FULL-OPEN POSITION
1. CHECK REAR GATE CONDITION.

Check the rear gate.

Is there any non genuine parts equipped to the rear gate? Or does it have foreign objects such as snow?

Remove non genuine parts or foreign objects. 2

2. CHECK REAR GATE.

Hold the rear gate at the fully open position.

 

The rear gate may drop suddenly. Be careful not to injure operators or damage the vehicle.

Does it hold at the fully open position?

  • The circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

     

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

Replace Power rear gate drive unit and power rear gate stay. POWER REAR GATE SYSTEM>Power Rear Gate Drive Unit
