Open the power rear gate manually.
Manually close the power rear gate to the partially latched position, and operate the auto closer to fully close the power rear gate.
Use any power rear gate operation switch to activate the power rear gate auto operation.
Is the initialization operation possible?
Perform basic inspection.

If the communication with the body integrated unit is not possible either, refer to LAN SYSTEM (DIAGNOSTICS).
LAN SYSTEM (DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Procedure for Subaru Select Monitor Communication
Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
Check the fuse.
Is the check result OK?
Replace the fuse. If the replaced fuse blows out easily, repair the ground short circuit in the harness between the battery and Power rear gate CM.
Disconnect the Power rear gate CM connector in the order of (R423) → (R422).
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Using a tester, measure the voltage between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

Is the voltage 10 V or more?
Repair the open circuit of the harness between Power rear gate CM connector and the fuse.
Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
Using a tester, measure the resistance between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

(R423) No. 4 — Chassis ground:
Is the resistance less than 1 Ω?
Repair the open circuit in harness between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.
Check the body control system.
BODY CONTROL(DIAGNOSTICS)>Basic Diagnostic Procedure
Is the check result OK?
Perform the inspection according to the diagnosis for body control system.
Connect the Subaru Select Monitor to another vehicle.
Check whether the communication for initializing can be executed normally.
Is communication normal?
Repair or replace the Subaru Select Monitor.
Connect the Power rear gate CM connector in the order of (R422) → (R423).
Communicate with [Power Rear Gate] using the Subaru Select Monitor.
Is communication possible?
The circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.
In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.
Replace Power rear gate CM.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
Check the fuse.

Is the check result OK?
Replace the defective fuse. When the replaced fuse is blown immediately, repair the short circuit.
Disconnect the Power rear gate CM connector (R423).
Using a tester, measure the voltage between Power rear gate CM connector and chassis ground.

When excessive load is applied to the power rear gate motor, and overcurrent is detected.
Trouble symptom:
The power rear gate auto-operation does not function, operation speed is slow, and incorrect reverse operation occurs.

In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

During the power rear gate reverse operation, beeping sound (warning sound) is made.

System is normal.

From the full open position, push the rear gate inner switch to perform the power rear gate auto close operation.
During the power rear gate auto close operation, press the sensor unit of the touch sensor to perform the reverse operation.

Disconnect the power rear gate buzzer connector.
Using an oscilloscope, measure the voltage between power rear gate buzzer connector and chassis ground.
From the full open position, push the rear gate inner switch to perform the power rear gate auto close operation.
During the power rear gate auto close operation, press the sensor unit of the touch sensor to perform the reverse operation.
