PROCEDURE

1. PERFORM CUSTOMER INTERVIEW.

Ask the customer when and how the trouble occurred using the interview check list. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Check List for Interview

Perform the interview, and 2

2. BASIC INSPECTION.

Is the check result OK?

Repair the faulty part found in basic inspection, and 3

3. CHECK SUBARU SELECT MONITOR COMMUNICATION.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Connect the Subaru Select Monitor to data link connector. COMMON(diag)>Data Link Connector

3.

Turn the ignition switch to ON and run the Subaru Select Monitor.

4.

Select [Headlight / Foglight].

 

For detailed operation procedures, refer to “Help” of application.

Is communication possible?

4. CHECK DTC.
1.

Read the DTC of [Headlight / Foglight] using the Subaru Select Monitor. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

2.

Record all DTCs, time stamp and freeze frame data.

 

For time stamp, refer to “LAN SYSTEM”. LAN SYSTEM (DIAGNOSTICS)>General Description>CAUTION > TIME STAMP

Are any DTCs displayed? (Current malfunction)

Record the DTC, time stamp and freeze frame data, and 5

Perform diagnosis according to the procedures in the diagnostics with phenomenon. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostics with Phenomenon

5. PERFORM DIAGNOSIS.
1.

Perform the diagnosis according to displayed DTC. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)>LIST

2.

Repair or replace the cause of trouble.

3.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, perform the clear memory of [Headlight / Foglight]. COMMON(diag)>Clear memory

4.
5.

Read the DTC of [Headlight / Foglight] using the Subaru Select Monitor. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

Are any DTCs displayed? (Current malfunction)

Repeat step 5 until DTC is not shown.

Finish the diagnosis.

INSPECTION
1. BASIC INSPECTION

Before performing diagnosis, check the following items which might affect the problems related to auto headlight beam leveler system or steering responsive headlight.

Check the relay and fuse condition. LIGHTING SYSTEM>Relay and Fuse

3.

Check the connecting condition of harness and harness connector.

2. FUNCTION CHECK
AUTO HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVELER SYSTEM
1.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

2.

Turn on the headlight low beam.

3.

Check that the beam axes move when the vehicle condition is kept for three seconds or more after the vehicle posture is changed with the vehicle stopped.

LED HEADLIGHT SYSTEM
1.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

2.

Turn on the headlight low beam.

3.

Check that the headlight Low beam illuminates with normal brightness.

STEERING RESPONSIVE HEADLIGHT (THE INITIALIZE FUNCTION)
1.

Stop the vehicle at approximately 1 m (3.3ft) away and perpendicular to the wall.

2.

Make the vehicle vicinity dark.

3.

Set the vehicle headlight switch to Low beam.

4.

Make sure that the headlight cut line moves to left and right immediately after the engine started.

PROCEDURE
1.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

2.

Turn on the headlight low beam.

3.

Check that the beam axes move when the vehicle condition is kept for three seconds or more after the vehicle posture is changed with the vehicle stopped.

4.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, read the DTC of [Headlight / Foglight] to check that there is no DTC displayed. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)

 

If the DTC is displayed on the screen, the trouble is still present. Perform the diagnosis for the displayed DTCs.

INSPECTION

Communication error with auto headlight beam leveler CM

Detecting condition:

  • Defective harness connector

  • Power supply circuit malfunction

  • Defective auto headlight beam leveler CM

  • Defective CAN communication circuit

  • Defective Subaru Select Monitor

Trouble symptom:

Communication is impossible between auto headlight beam leveler CM and Subaru Select Monitor.

Initialization is required after replacing the auto headlight beam leveler CM. LIGHTING SYSTEM>Auto Headlight Beam Leveler System>PROCEDURE

1. CHECK FUSE.

Is the fuse OK?

Replace the fuse. If the replaced fuse has blown out immediately, repair the short circuit to ground in harness between battery and auto headlight beam leveler CM.

2. CHECK HARNESS.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Disconnect the connector of combination meter.

3.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

4.

Using a tester, measure the voltage between auto headlight beam leveler CM connector and chassis ground.

Is the voltage 10 — 13 V?

Repair the open circuit in the harness between auto headlight beam leveler CM connector and fuse.

3. CHECK HARNESS.

Using a tester, measure the resistance between the auto headlight beam leveler CM connector and chassis ground.

Is the resistance less than 1 Ω?

Repair the open circuit of harness between auto headlight beam leveler CM connector and chassis ground.

4. CHECK LAN SYSTEM.

Is the check result OK?

Perform the inspection according to the diagnosis for LAN system.

5. CHECK SUBARU SELECT MONITOR.
1.

Connect the select monitor to another vehicle.

2.

Check whether the communication for initializing can be executed normally.

Is communication normal?

Repair or replace the Subaru Select Monitor.

6. CHECK AUTO HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVELER CM.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Connect the auto headlight beam leveler CM connector.

3.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

4.

Communicate with [Headlight / Foglight] using the Subaru Select Monitor.

Is communication possible?

  • The circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

     

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

  • Even if DTC is displayed, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

  •  

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

  • Even if DTC is displayed, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

     

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

2. CHECK DATA MONITOR.

3. CHECK THE HEADLIGHT SYSTEM POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT.
1.

Disconnect the headlight assembly RH and LH connectors.

2.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF → ON.

3.

Turn the lighting switch to 2 (HEAD).

4.

Using a tester, measure the voltage between headlight assembly RH connector and chassis ground.

Connector & terminal

(B487) No. 1 (+) — Chassis ground (−):

Is the voltage 10 — 13 V?

Repair the headlight system.

4. CHECK HARNESS (OPEN CIRCUIT).
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Using a tester, measure the resistance between headlight assembly RH and LH connector and chassis ground.

(B487) No. 3 — Chassis ground:

Is the resistance less than 10 Ω?

Repair or replace the open circuit of harness.

5. CHECK HEADLIGHT SYSTEM.
1.

Connect the headlight assembly RH connector.

2.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF → ON.

3.

Turn the lighting switch to 2 (HEAD).

Does the headlight come on at normal brightness?

Replace the headlight. LIGHTING SYSTEM>Headlight Assembly

6. CHECK HARNESS (OPEN CIRCUIT).
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Disconnect the auto headlight beam leveler CM connector.

3.

Using a tester, measure the resistance between auto headlight beam leveler CM connector and headlight assembly RH connector.

Is the resistance less than 10 Ω?

Repair or replace the open circuit of harness.

7. CHECK HARNESS (OPEN CIRCUIT).

  • Even if DTC is displayed, the circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

2. CHECK DATA MONITOR.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data monitor] of [Headlight / Foglight]. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

Does the data display [Extinction]?

Measure the voltage between the auto headlight beam leveler CM connector and chassis ground.

1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Connect the auto headlight beam leveler CM connector.

3.

Turn the ignition switch to ON, and within 10 seconds, repeat the OFF → Low beam of headlight switch 5 times.

4.

Check that the headlight beam drops once, then returns to normal.

5.

Then, after waiting for 30 seconds or more with the ignition ON, turn the ignition switch to OFF.

Does the headlight beam drop down once, and then return?

  • Actuator Signal

3.

Turn the ignition switch to ON, and within 10 seconds, repeat the OFF → Low beam of headlight switch 5 times.

4.

Check that the headlight beam drops once, then returns to normal.

Then, after waiting for 30 seconds or more with the ignition ON, turn the ignition switch to OFF.

Does the data monitor indicate the standard value? (Does the value change at 10 — 90 %?)

Disconnect the auto headlight beam leveler CM connector.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

Measure the voltage between the auto headlight beam leveler CM connector and chassis ground.

7. CHECK SRH OFF SWITCH CIRCUIT.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

Disconnect the SRH OFF switch connector.

Disconnect the auto headlight beam leveler CM connector.

4.

Using a tester, measure the resistance between the auto headlight beam leveler CM connector and the SRH OFF switch connector, and between the SRH OFF switch connector and chassis ground.

Is the resistance less than 1 Ω?

Repair or replace the open circuit of harness.

10. CHECK SWIVEL ACTUATOR POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Disconnect the headlight assembly connector.

3.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

4.

Using a tester, measure the voltage between headlight assembly connector and chassis ground.

Is the voltage 8 — 16 V?

Check the battery and fuse. If no fault is found, check the swivel actuator power supply circuit.

11. CHECK SRH OPERATION.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Connect all the disconnected connectors.

3.

Drive the vehicle to verify on which side, LH side or RH side, the SRH improper operation occurred.

 

At night, drive a curve of steering wheel angle approximately 45 degrees or more with vehicle speed at 40 km/h (25 MPH) or more, or drive a curve of steering wheel angle approximately 80 degrees or more with vehicle speed at 15 km/h (9 MPH) or more to check the SRH operation.

Is the improper operation occurring on either left or right side only?

12. CHECK ACTIVE TEST OF SWIVEL ACTUATOR.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Active Test] of [Headlight / Foglight]. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Active Test

  • Right Steering Responsive Headlight

  • Left Steering Responsive Headlight

Is the actuator current position value approximately the same as the input value of the actuator control position? (Within 1.2 seconds)

  • When the value is not the same on one side only, replace the headlight assembly of the side where the same value is not achieved.

  • When the value is not the same on both sides, 13

13. CHECK AUTO HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVELER CM POWER SUPPLY.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

2.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data monitor] of [Headlight / Foglight]. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • Control module voltage

Is the voltage 8 — 16 V?

Replace the auto headlight beam leveler CM. LIGHTING SYSTEM>Auto Headlight Beam Leveler Control Module

Check the battery and fuse. If no fault is found, check the auto headlight beam leveler CM power supply circuit.

14. DRIVING CHECK.

Perform the road test to make sure there is no yawing.

Is it yawing?

Check the vehicle alignment. FRONT SUSPENSION>Wheel Alignment

  • The circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

  •  

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.

5. CHECK INPUT SIGNAL.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data monitor] of [Headlight / Foglight]. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • Vehicle speed signal

  • Steering Angle Signal

Is [Vehicle speed signal] 8 km/h (5 MPH) or less, and [Steering Angle Signal] 8.5 deg or less?

6. CHECK SWIVEL ACTUATOR TARGET ANGLE.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data monitor] of [Headlight / Foglight]. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • Left Steering Responsive Headlight Target Angle

  • Right Steering Responsive Headlight Target Angle

Is the target angle 0 degree?

7. CHECK AUTO HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVELER CM POWER SUPPLY.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

2.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data monitor] of [Headlight / Foglight]. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • Control module voltage

Is the voltage 8 — 16 V?

Check the battery and fuse. If no fault is found, check the auto headlight beam leveler CM power supply circuit.

8. CHECK SWIVEL ACTUATOR POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Disconnect the headlight assembly connector.

3.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

4.

Using a tester, measure the voltage between headlight assembly connector and chassis ground.

Connector & terminal

(B487) No. 6 (+) — Chassis ground (−):

(B477) No. 6 (+) — Chassis ground (−):

Is the voltage 8 — 16 V?

Replace the auto headlight beam leveler CM. LIGHTING SYSTEM>Auto Headlight Beam Leveler Control Module

Check the battery and fuse. If no fault is found, check the swivel actuator power supply circuit.

9. CHECK SWIVEL ACTUATOR CURRENT ANGLE.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data monitor] of [Headlight / Foglight]. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • Left Steering Responsive Headlight Current Angle

  • Right Steering Responsive Headlight Current Angle

Is the current angle 0 degree?

10. CHECK SWIVEL ACTUATOR POWER SUPPLY.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data monitor] of [Headlight / Foglight]. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • Left Steering Responsive Headlight Power Supply Failure

  • Right Steering Responsive Headlight Power Supply Failure

Is [FAIL] displayed?

Check the battery and fuse. If no fault is found, check the swivel actuator power supply circuit.

11. CHECK SWIVEL ACTUATOR POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Disconnect the headlight assembly connector.

3.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

4.

Using a tester, measure the voltage between headlight assembly connector and chassis ground.

Connector & terminal

(B487) No. 6 (+) — Chassis ground (−):

(B477) No. 6 (+) — Chassis ground (−):

Is the voltage 8 — 16 V?

Replace the headlight assembly. LIGHTING SYSTEM>Headlight Assembly

Check the battery and fuse. If no fault is found, check the swivel actuator power supply circuit.

12. CHECK AUTO HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVELER CM POWER SUPPLY.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data monitor] of [Headlight / Foglight]. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • Control module voltage

Is the voltage 8 — 16 V?

Check the battery and fuse. If no fault is found, check the auto headlight beam leveler CM power supply circuit.

13. CHECK SWIVEL ACTUATOR POWER SUPPLY.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Data monitor] of [Headlight / Foglight]. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Data Monitor

  • Left Steering Responsive Headlight Power Supply Failure

  • Right Steering Responsive Headlight Power Supply Failure

Is [FAIL] displayed?

Check the battery and fuse. If no fault is found, check the swivel actuator power supply circuit.

14. CHECK SWIVEL ACTUATOR POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT.
1.

Turn the ignition switch to OFF.

2.

Disconnect the headlight assembly connector.

3.

Turn the ignition switch to ON.

4.

Using a tester, measure the voltage between headlight assembly connector and chassis ground.

Is the voltage 8 — 16 V?

Check the battery and fuse. If no fault is found, check the swivel actuator power supply circuit.

15. CHECK ACTIVE TEST OF SWIVEL ACTUATOR.

Using the Subaru Select Monitor, check the following items in the [Active Test] of [Headlight / Foglight]. HEADLIGHT / FOGLIGHT(DIAGNOSTICS)>Active Test

  • Right Steering Responsive Headlight

  • Left Steering Responsive Headlight

Is the actuator current position value approximately the same as the input value of the actuator control position? (Within 1.2 seconds)

16. DRIVING CHECK.

Perform the road test to make sure there is no yawing.

Is it yawing?

Check the vehicle alignment. FRONT SUSPENSION>Wheel Alignment

  • The circuit has returned to a normal condition at this time. Reproduce the failure, and then perform the diagnosis again.

  •  

    In this case, temporary poor contact of connector, temporary open or short circuit of harness may be the cause.
