Code No.U1500: Column switch time-out

If diagnosis code No.U1500 is set in the ETACS-ECU, diagnose the CAN main bus line.

TROUBLE JUDGMENT
The ETACS-ECU communicates with the column switch through the LIN communication line. If there is any trouble in that communication, diagnosis code U1500 will be set.
COMMENT ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM
The column switch, the ETACS-ECU, connector(s), or wiring harness between the two may be defective.
PROBABLE CAUSES
- Malfunction of the lighting switch
- Malfunction of the ETACS-ECU
- Damaged harness wires and connectors

STEP 1. Connector check: B-238 column switch connector
|
|
Q.
Is the check result normal?
 Go to Step 2.
 Repair the defective connector.
|
|
|
STEP 2. Voltage measurement at B-238 column switch connector.
|
|
(1)Disconnect the column switch connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.
|
|
(2)Voltage between B-238 column switch connector terminal No.1 and body earth
OK: System voltage
Q.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 4.
Go to Step 3.

STEP 3. Check the wiring harness between B-238 column switch connector terminal No.1 and the fusible link (1).

|

Prior to the wiring harness inspection, check junction block connector B-208, B-231 and joint connector B-24, and repair if necessary.
|
- Check the power supply line for open circuit.
Q.
Is the check result normal?
The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions  ).
Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 4. Voltage measurement at B-238 column switch connector.
|
|
(1)Disconnect the column switch connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.
(2)Ignition switch: ON
|
|
(3)Voltage between B-238 column switch connector terminal No.9 and body earth
OK: System voltage
Q.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 6.
Go to Step 5.

STEP 5. Check the wiring harness between B-238 column switch connector terminal No.9 and the ignition switch (IG1).

Prior to the wiring harness inspection, check junction block connector B-229, B-231 and joint connector B-26, and repair if necessary.

- Check the power supply line for open circuit.
Q.
Is the check result normal?
Perform troubleshooting for ignition switch. Refer to GROUP 54A - Ignition switch .
Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 6. Resistance measurement at the B-238 column switch connector.
|
|
(1)Remove the column switch connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.
|
|
(2)Resistance between B-238 column switch connector terminal No.4 and body earth
OK: Continuity exists (2 Ω or less)
Q.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 8.
Go to Step 7.

STEP 7. Check the wiring harness between B-238 column switch connector terminal No.4 and the body earth.
|
|
- Check the earth wires for open circuit.
Q.
Is the check result normal?
The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to Use Troubleshooting/Inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunctions ).
Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 8. Connector check: B-233 ETACS-ECU connector
|
|
Q.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 9.
Repair the defective connector.
|
|
|
STEP 9. Check the wiring harness from B-233 ETACS-ECU connector terminal Nos. 54 and 64 to B-238 column switch connector terminal Nos. 3 and 8.
|
|
- Check the communication lines for open circuit and short circuit.
Q.
Is the check result normal?
Go to Step 10.
Repair the wiring harness.

|
STEP 10. Check whether the diagnosis code is reset.
|
|
|
Replace the lighting switch, and then check that the diagnosis code is reset.
|
|
|
(1)Replace the lighting switch.
|
|
|
(2)Turn the ignition switch from "LOCK" (OFF) position to "ON" position.
|
|
|
(3)On completion, check that the diagnosis code is not reset.
|
|
|
Q.
Is the diagnosis code set?
|
|
|
Replace the ETACS-ECU. Then perform the variant coding and write the VIN data (Refer to GROUP 00, Precautions Before Service - How to Perform Variant Coding ).

|
The procedure is complete.
