Inspection Procedure D-1: The rear wiper does not work at all. <COLT>

caution Whenever the ECU is replaced, ensure that the input and output signal circuits are normal.

COMMENTS ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM

If the rear wiper does not work at all, the input signal circuits to the components below, the rear wiper motor or the ETACS-ECU may be defective.

  • Ignition switch (ACC)
  • Rear wiper switch

PROBABLE CAUSES

  • Malfunction of the rear wiper motor
  • Malfunction of the column switch
  • Malfunction of the ETACS-ECU
  • Damaged harness wires and connectors

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. M.U.T.-III diagnosis code.

Check that ETACS-ECU sets a diagnosis code.

Q. Is the diagnosis code set?

Refer to diagnosis code chart .
Go to Step 2.

STEP 2. M.U.T.-III data list

Check the input signal below which are related to the rear wiper.

  • Ignition switch: ACC
  • Rear wiper switch: ON
Item No.
Item name
Normal condition
16
Tail wiper interval
ON
29
Ignition Switch (ACC)
ON
OK: Normal conditions are displayed for all the items.

Q. Is the check result normal?

All the signals are received normally. : Go to Step 3.
The ignition switch (ACC) signal is not received. : Refer to inspection procedure J-2 "The ignition switch (ACC) signal is not received ."
The rear wiper switch signal is not received. : Refer to Inspection Procedure J-1 "The column switch (lighting and wiper switch) signal is not received ."

STEP 3. M.U.T.-III actuator test

Perform the actuator test of the ETACS-ECU, and check that the rear wiper works normally.

  • Item 13: Rear wiper: OFF
  • Item 14: Rear wiper: ON

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 12.
Go to Step 4.

STEP 4. Connector check: E-10 rear wiper motor connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5.

Repair the connector.

STEP 5. Check the rear wiper motor.

Refer to GROUP 51 - Rear wiper and washer .

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 6.
Replace the rear wiper motor.

STEP 6. Resistance measurement at the E-10 rear wiper motor connector.

(1)Disconnect the connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.

(2)Resistance between E-10 rear wiper motor connector terminal No.3 and body earth
OK: Continuity exists (2 Ω or less)

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 8.

Go to Step 7.

STEP 7. Check the wiring harness between E-10 rear wiper motor connector terminal No.3 and body earth.

  • Check the earth line for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to use Troubleshooting/inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).

Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 8. Connector check: B-234 ETACS-ECU connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 9.

Repair the connector.

STEP 9. Voltage measurement at the B-234 ETACS-ECU connector.

(1)Remove the ETACS-ECU, and measure at the junction box side.
(2)Ignition switch: ACC

(3)Check the voltage between the B-234 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No.11 and body earth.
OK: System voltage

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 11.

Go to Step 10.

STEP 10. Check the wiring harness between B-234 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No.11 and the ignition switch (ACC).

note Prior to the wiring harness inspection, check the junction block connector B-229 and repair if necessary.

  • Check the power supply line to the ignition switch (ACC) for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Perform troubleshooting for ignition switch. Refer to GROUP 54A - Ignition switch .

Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 11. Check the wiring harness between B-234 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No.13 and E-10 rear wiper motor connector terminal No.2.

note Prior to the wiring harness inspection, check intermediate connector E-11 and junction block connectors B-228, and repair if necessary.

  • Check the output line for open circuit and short circuit.

Q. 1Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 12.

Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 12. Retest the system.

Check that the rear wiper works normally.

Q. Is the check result normal?

The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to use Troubleshooting/inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).
Replace the ETACS-ECU. Then perform the variant coding and write the VIN data (Refer to GROUP 00, Precautions Before Service - How to Perform Variant Coding ).
