Inspection Procedure C-2: The windshield wipers do not work normally.

caution Whenever the ECU is replaced, ensure that the input and output signal circuits are normal.

COMMENTS ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM

When one or more of "Hi", "Lo" or "INT" work, the windshield wiper motor, the column switch or the ETACS-ECU may be defective.

PROBABLE CAUSES

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. M.U.T.-III diagnosis code.

Check that ETACS-ECU sets a diagnosis code.

Q. Is the diagnosis code set?

Refer to diagnosis code chart .
Go to Step 2.

STEP 2. M.U.T.-III data list

Check the input signals below which are related to the windshield wiper.
(1)Turn the ignition switch to the "ON" position.
(2)Operate the windshield wiper switch.
Item No.
Item name
Normal condition
11
Front wiper
ON when each switch is operated.
12
Front wiper interval
13
Front wiper level 1 slow
14
Front wiper level 2 fast
OK: Normal conditions are displayed for all the functions of the switch.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 3.
Refer to Inspection Procedure J-1 "The column switch (lighting and wiper switch) signal is not received ."

STEP 3. Connector check: A-03 windshield wiper motor connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 4.

Repair the defective connector.

STEP 4. Check the windshield wiper motor assembly.

Refer to GROUP 51 - Windshield wiper <LH drive vehicles> or <RH drive vehicles>.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5.
Replace the windshield wiper motor assembly.

STEP 5. Check the operation of HI side circuit.

Check that the windshield wipers work normally by moving the switch to HI or MIST position.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 6.
Go to Step 9.

STEP 6. Connector check: B-234 ETACS-ECU connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 7.

Repair the defective connector.

STEP 7. Check the wiring harness between B-234 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No.8 and A-03 windshield wiper motor connector terminal No.3 <LH drive vehicles> or No.4 <RH drive vehicles>.

note Prior to the wiring harness inspection, check the junction block connector B-212 and repair if necessary.

  • Check the output lines for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 8.

Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 8. Retest the system.

Check that the windshield wipers work normally by moving the switch to each position.

Q. Is the check result normal?

The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to use Troubleshooting/inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).
Replace the ETACS-ECU.

STEP 9. Connector check: B-234 ETACS-ECU connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 10.

Repair the defective connector.

STEP 10. Check the wiring harness between B-234 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No.7 and A-03 windshield wiper motor connector terminal No.5 <LH drive vehicles> or No.1 <RH drive vehicles>.

note Prior to the wiring harness inspection, check the junction block connector B-212 and repair if necessary.

  • Check the output lines for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 11.

Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 11.
