Inspection Procedure C-1: The windshield wipers do not work at all.

caution Whenever the ECU is replaced, ensure that the input and output signal circuits are normal.

COMMENTS ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM

When none of "Hi", "Lo" or "INT" works, the windshield wiper motor, the column switch or the ETACS-ECU may be defective.

PROBABLE CAUSES

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. M.U.T.-III diagnosis code.

Check that ETACS-ECU sets a diagnosis code.

Q. Is the diagnosis code set?

Refer to diagnosis code chart .
Go to Step 2.

STEP 2. M.U.T.-III data list

Check the input signals below which are related to the windshield wiper.

  • Turn the ignition switch to the "ACC" position.
Item No.
Item name
Normal condition
29
Ignition switch (ACC)
ON
OK: Normal condition is displayed.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 3.
Refer to inspection procedure J-2 "The ignition switch (ACC) signal is not received ."

STEP 3. M.U.T.-III actuator test

Perform the actuator test of the ETACS-ECU, and check that the windshield wiper works normally.

  • Item 07: Front wiper enable: OFF
  • Item 08: Front wiper enable: ON
  • Item 09: Front wiper speed: DOWN
  • Item 10: Front wiper speed: UP

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 11.
Go to Step 4.

STEP 4. Connector check: A-03 windshield wiper motor connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 5.

Repair the connector.

STEP 5. Check the windshield wiper motor assembly.

Refer to GROUP 51 - Windshield wiper <LH drive vehicles> or <RH drive vehicles>.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 6.
Replace the windshield wiper motor assembly.

STEP 6. Resistance measurement at the A-03 windshield wiper motor connector.

(1)Disconnect the connector, and measure at the wiring harness side.

(2)Continuity between A-03 windshield wiper motor connector terminal No.4 <LH drive vehicles>, No.5 <RH drive vehicles> and body earth
OK: 2Ω or less

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 8.

Go to Step 7.

STEP 7. Check the wiring harness between A-03 windshield wiper motor connector terminal No.4 <LH drive vehicles>, No.5 <RH drive vehicles> and body earth.

  • Check the earth wires for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

The trouble can be an intermittent malfunction (Refer to GROUP 00 - How to use Troubleshooting/inspection Service Points - How to Cope with Intermittent Malfunction ).

Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 8. Connector check: B-234 ETACS-ECU connector

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 9.

Repair the connector.

STEP 9. Voltage measurement at the B-234 ETACS-ECU connector.

(1)Remove the ETACS-ECU, and measure at the junction box side.
(2)Turn the ignition switch to the "ACC" position.

(3)Check the voltage between the B-234 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No.10 and body earth.
OK: System voltage

Q. Is the check result normal?

Go to Step 11.

Go to Step 10.

STEP 10. Check the wiring harness between B-234 ETACS-ECU connector terminal No.10 and the ignition switch (ACC).

note Prior to the wiring harness inspection, check the junction block connector B-229 and repair if necessary.

  • Check the power supply line to the ignition switch (ACC) for open circuit.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Perform troubleshooting for ignition switch. Refer to GROUP 54A - Ignition switch .

Repair the wiring harness.

STEP 11. Temporarily replace the column switch (Turn-signal and lighting switch), and check the trouble symptom.

The windshield wiper should now work normally at all.

Q. Is the check result normal?

Replace the column switch (Turn-signal and lighting switch).
Replace the ETACS-ECU. Then perform the variant coding and write the VIN data (Refer to GROUP 00, Precautions Before Service - How to Perform Variant Coding ).
