Inspection procedure 8: The tachometer does not work (the other meters work).

COMMENTS ON TROUBLE SYMPTOM

If only the tachometer does not operate, the engine-ECU or the engine-A-M/T-ECU <Automated manual transmission> system may not be sending ignition signal, or the combination meter, the wiring harness or its connector may be defective.

PROBABLE CAUSES

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. M.U.T.-III CAN bus diagnostics

warning Since the radiator fan rotates during CAN bus line diagnostics, make sure that no one is servicing the engine compartment before diagnosing the CAN bus line. Since the CAN communication stops when diagnosing the CAN bus line, the ETACS-ECU detects the time-out of the engine-ECU, and activates the radiator fan to prevent overheating as fail-safe.
Use the M.U.T.-III to diagnose the CAN bus lines.

Q. Is the check result satisfactory?

Go to Step 2.

Repair the CAN bus line (Refer to GROUP 54C, Troubleshooting ). After diagnosing the CAN bus lines, go to Step 5.

STEP 2. M.U.T.-III diagnosis code

Check whether the MPI system-related diagnosis code is set.

Q. Is the diagnosis code set?

Diagnose the MPI system. Refer to GROUP 13A, Troubleshooting <1100>, GROUP 13B, Troubleshooting <1300, except 1500-T/C> or GROUP 13C, Troubleshooting <1500-T/C>. After diagnosing the MPI system, go to Step 5.

Go to Step 3.

STEP 3. M.U.T.-III data list

Q. Is the check result satisfactory?

Go to Step 4.

STEP 4. M.U.T.-III actuator test

OK: The tachometer operates.

Q. Is the check result satisfactory?

Go to Step 5.

After the combination meter is replaced, then perform the variant coding (Refer to GROUP 00, Precautions Before Service - How to Perform Variant Coding ). Then go to Step 5.

STEP 5. Retest the system.

Check that the tachometer works normally.

Q. Is the check result normal?

The procedure is complete.

Go to Step 1.
