TIE ROD FREE PLAY CHECK

1.Jack-up on one side wheel of the vehicle.
2.Confirm the range of free play on the wheel under the condition that the steering wheel does not rotate.

3.Set the dial gauge on the wheel rim where the position is the same height as the wheel centre as shown in the figure.

4.Methods to measure free play with a dial gauge.

  • In case of use of push-pull gauge, push alternately position A and B of the wheel rim (front side and back side), where the position is the same height as the wheel centre, by push-pull gauge with force 100N, and the read scale of dial gauge as shown in the figure.

  • In case of use of spring balance, pull alternately position C and D of the wheel rim (front side and back side), where the position is the same height as the wheel centre, by spring balance with force 100N that is hooked to the wheel via a string, and the read scale of dial gauge as shown in the figure.
5.In case that the total amount of displacement (total value of the plus and minus) is more than specified value for judgment: 0.6mm, please investigate the free play area between the tie rod end and the gear box. Replace parts if necessary.
6.If total amount of displacement (total value of the plus or minus) is less than specified value for judgment: 0.6mm, the free play area is not between the tie rod end and the gear box (Do not replace tie rod nor gear box). Please investigate the other areas for the source of the knocking noise.
note Measure free play of left and right wheel separately.
