BASE ENGINE

TIMING BELT COVER

In accordance with adopting the directly installed connector type crank angle sensor, the timing belt train with the built-in harness is used for the timing belt cover.

TIMING BELT TRAIN

A single timing belt drives both camshafts.
The timing belt tension changes depending on the engine temperature or the belt deterioration, so that auto tensioner absorbs this change and is designed to improve the belt endurance preventing the belt noise.

CYLINDER HEAD

The performance of the air intake in the cylinder head is improved by having four valves and improving the intake and exhaust port profiles, resulting in reduction of air flow resistance.
The spark plugs are located at the center of the combustion chambers.
The cylinder head is designed to improve the cooling performance, the higher compression ratio and the fuel efficiency by expanding the cooling water room.
The camshaft bearings are placed at six locations on intake side, and six on the exhaust side.

VALVE TRAIN

The valve train is changed to DOHC-16 valve from SOHC-16 valve.
By installing the hydraulic lash adjuster, the valve train results in the improvement in the noise reduction and the maintenance-free for the valve clearance.

CAMSHAFT

The camshaft, which has the oil passage to transfer the oil pressure from the oil control valve to the V.V.T. sprocket, is designed to be lightweight by using the midair camshaft.

VARIABLE VALVE TIMING CONTROL SYSTEM

The variable valve timing control system consists of the parts shown in figures.

V.V.T. SPROCKET (VARIABLE VALVE TIMING SPROCKET)

The vane rotor is driven by the oil pressure from the oil control and the V.V.T. sprocket allow the valve timing to be optimum depending on the vehicle operation.

OCV (OIL CONTROL VALVE)

The OCV adopts the electromagnetic valve, which is driven by the signal from Engine-ECU, to switch the oil pressure which affects the vane rotor of the V.V.T. sprocket assembly.

PISTON

The piston is designed to reduce the friction by applying a molybdenum coating to the piston skirt.

PISTON RING

The piston is designed to make the engine’s friction less by reducing the width and the tension in the piston ring.
