HOW TO PERFORM VARIANT CODING

AIM

The "variant coding" means using the M.U.T.-III to write vehicle information such as engine type, transmission type or the brake type into an ECU. The information to be written in the ECU is called as "variant code". The variant code will be sent to other via CAN communication. It is also used to determine control contents of the ECUs.
In some ECUs, temporary or irrelevant variant code may has been written as a default setting. In this case, unless the variant code is corrected according to the vehicle, an inappropriate diagnosis code may be stored, or the ECU cannot function correctly.
If the ECU below is replaced with new one, use the M.U.T.-III to carry out the variant coding as follows.
Component to be replaced
Engine-ECU <M/T>
Engine automated manual transmission electronic control unit (Engine-A-M/T-ECU) <Automated manual transmission>
ABS/Active stability control system-ECU <Vehicles with Active stability control system>
Combination meter
ETACS-ECU

PROCEDURE

1.
caution Before connecting or disconnecting the M.U.T.-III, turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position.
Connect the M.U.T.-III to the diagnosis connector.
note For details on how to use the M.U.T.-III, refer to the "M.U.T.-III operation manual."
2.Select "Coding" from the menu screen.
3.Select "On Vehicle Coding" from the menu screen.
4.Enter the chassis number. <Except combination meter>
note When ABS-ECU and electric power steering-ECU are replaced with a new one, select "On Vehicle Chassis Number or VIN Writing" from the menu screen, and enter the chassis number.
5.Select the variant coding item and variant coding content as follows, and carry out the variant coding.

6.After the variant coding has completed, use the M.U.T.-III to check the diagnosis codes for all systems. Confirm that no diagnosis codes are set.
note When the variant coding is carried out, the ABS/Active stability control system-ECU will memorize the diagnosis code. After the variant coding has been finished, turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" (OFF) position and erase the diagnosis code.
7.If any of the diagnosis codes are set, the variant coding may have been completed incorrectly. Erase the diagnosis code(s). Then repeat the variant coding.
