Piston, Pin and Connecting Rod Replacement (cont'd)

7-16

  1. Check the piston ring and the piston ring groove clearance. Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the piston ring and the piston ring groove at several points around the piston. If the clearance between the piston ring and the piston ring groove exceeds the specified limit, the piston ring must be replaced.

Piston ring and piston ring groove clearance:

1st compression ring

Standard (New):

0.090 – 0.122 mm

(0.0035 – 0.0048 in.)

Service limit:

0.15 mm (0.006 in.)

2nd compression ring

Standard (New):

0.070 – 0.110 mm

(0.0028 – 0.0043 in.)

Service limit:

0.15 mm (0.006 in.)

Oil ring

Standard (New):

0.025 – 0.065 mm

(0.0010 – 0.0026 in.)

Service limit:

0.15 mm (0.006 in.)

  1. Visually inspect the piston. If a piston ring groove is damaged or distorted, the piston must be replaced.

  1. Use a piston ring replacer to install the three piston rings. Install the piston rings in the order shown in the illustration.

A 1st compression ring (Barrel face type)

B 2nd compression ring

C Oil ring (Coil expander type)

NOTE:

  • Install the compression rings with the stamped side facing up.
  • Insert the expander coil into the oil ring groove so that there is no gap on either side of the expander coil before installing the oil ring.
