- Remove the injector seals from top of the cylinder head cover (A) and side of the cylinder head cover (B).

- Remove the cylinder head cover.
- Turn engine in direction of engine rotation to ''1st Cylinder TDC''.
- Turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation until cam pairs (A) and (B) point upwards. These valves are thus closed and can be checked.

- The valve clearance is checked using a feeler gauge.
Valve clearance:
Intake valves:
0.40 + 0.05 mm
Exhaust valves:
0.40 + 0.05 mm
- If you feel too much or too little drag, turn tappet until tappet groove points outwards.

Adjustment
- Press down tappet using special tool (5-8840-9046-0 for intake) (5-8840-9047-0 for exhaust).
-
Use different tool versions for exhaust and intake sides.
- It must be ensured that the valves are not adjusted when the pistons are at ''TDC''. The valves can strike the pistons.

- Lever out shim using a small screwdriver and remove.

- Example for determination of shim thickness:
-
Measurement between cam and tappets 0.45 mm
- Thickness of installed shim + 3.15 mm
=3.6 mm
- Nominal valve clearance (in) - 0.40 mm
- Thickness of new shim = 3.20 mm
