Starter Circuit Troubleshooting

  1. Remove the No. 6 (20A) fuse from the under-hood fuse/relay.
  1. Turn the ignition switch to start (III).

Does the engine crank?

YES – Go to step 3.

NO – Go to step 7.

  1. Check the engine cranking speed with the scan tool. Turn the engine cranking.

Is the engine cranking speed about 200 rpm?

YES – Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose wires at the starter.

NO – Go to step 4.

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  1. Inspect the battery charging condition, poor connections or loose wires at the battery.

Was a problem found?

YES – Repair as necessary.

NO – Go to step 6.

  1. Check the engine oil viscosity.

Was a problem found?

YES – Replace as necessary.

NO – Substitute a known-good starter and recheck. If symptom/indication goes away, replace the original starter.

  1. Check the rotation sound of the starter.

Can the rotation sound of the starter be heard?

YES – Go to step 8.

NO – Go to step 11.

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  1. Remove the starter from the engine.
  1. Check the engagement of pinion and ring gear.

Is the engagement normal?

YES – Repair as necessary. (Pinion assembly or planetary gear.)

NO – Repair the engagement of pinion and ring gear or the shift lever.

  1. Inspect the battery charging condition, poor connections or loose wires at the battery.

Was a problem found?

YES – Repair as necessary.

NO – Go to step 12.
