Charging Circuit Troubleshooting

  1. Turn the ignition switch ON.

Does the charge lamp come ON?

YES – Go to step 5.

NO – Go to step 2.

  1. Disconnect the alternator connector.
  1. Connect the alternator connector (Chassis harness side) terminal L and body ground with a jumper wire.
  1. Check the charge lamp circuit for an open.

Does the charge lamp come ON?

YES – Replace the rear cover.

NO – Repair as necessary. (Replace the charge lamp bulb or repair the wire for an open.)

  1. Start the engine at idle speed.

Does the charge lamp go OFF?

YES – Go to step 7.

NO – Go to step 6.

  1. Check the fan belt and tension.

Is a problem found?

YES – Repair as necessary.

NO – Check for poor connections or loose wires at the L terminal and battery terminal.

  1. Stabilise the engine speed at 1500 rpm.
  1. Measure the battery voltage.

Is the battery voltage more than 15.5 V?

YES – Replace the rear cover.

NO – Go to step 9.

  1. Measure the battery voltage.

Is the battery voltage within 12.5 to 15.0 V?

YES – Replace the rear cover.

NO – Go to step 10.

  1. Turn the head lamp switch ON at the engine idling.

Does the charge lamp come ON?

YES – Replace the rear cover.

NO – Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose wires at the alternator connector.
