DTC Troubleshooting: P0506 (14)

DTC P0506:  Idle Control System RPM Lower Than Expected


1.Turn the ignition switch ON (II).

2.Do the DTC CLEAR in the CLEAR MENU with the Honda PGM Tester or the HDS.

3.Start the engine, Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm (min-1) with no load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on.

4.Test under following conditions.
  • Engine coolant temperature more than 70°C (156°F)
  • Intake air tenperature more than 0°C (32°F)
  • More than 15 seconds elapsed after starting the engine
  • Vehicle not moving
  • Fuel trim between 0.73 and 1.47
  • Fuel feed back in close loop

5.Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P0506 in the DTCs MENU with the Honda PGM Tester or the HDS.

Is it FAILED?


YES - Go to 6.


NO - If it is PASSED, go to 15. If it is EXECUTING, keep the condition continually until a result comes on. If it is Out of CONDITION, go to 4 and recheck.


6.Remove the intake air duct from the throttle body.

7.Check for dirt, carbon and damage at the throttle bore.

Is there dirt, carbon or damage in the throttle bore?


YES - If there is dirt or carbon, clean the throttle body, and also check for damage at the air cleaner element, then go to 9. If there is damage in the throttle bore, go to 8.


NO - Check the A/C system or power steering system, then go to 1 and recheck.


8.Replace the throttle body, then go to 9.

9.Do the ECM/PCM RESET in the CLEAR MENU with the Honda PGM Tester or the HDS.

10.Do the ECM/PCM idle learn procedure.

11.Start the engine, Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm (min-1) with no load (in Park or neutral) until the radiator fan comes on.

12.Test under following conditions.
  • Engine coolant temperature more than 70°C (156°F)
  • Intake air tenperature more than 0°C (32°F)
  • More than 15 seconds elapsed after starting the engine
  • Vehicle not moving
  • Fuel trim between 0.73 and 1.47
  • Fuel feed back in close loop

13.Check for temporary DTCs or DTCs in the DTCs MENU with the Honda PGM Tester or the HDS.

Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated?


YES - If DTC P0506 is indicated, go to 1 and recheck. If any other temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC troubleshooting.


NO - Go to 14.


14.Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P0506 in the DTCs MENU with the Honda PGM Tester or the HDS.

Is it PASSED?


YES - Troubleshooting is complete.n


NO - If it is FAILED, go to 1 and recheck. If it is EXECUTING, keep the condition continually until a result comes on. If it is Out of CONDITION, go to 12 and recheck.


15.Remove the intake air duct from the throttle body.

16.Check for dirt, carbon and damage at the throttle bore.

Is there dirt, carbon or damage in the throttle bore?


YES - If there is dirt or carbon, clean the throttle body, and also check for damage at the air cleaner element, then go to 9. If there is damage in the throttle bore, go to 8.


NO - Go to 17.



17.Recheck with different load condition (turn on the headlights, blower motor, rear window defogger and/or/A/C, changing the gear position, etc.)

18.Monitor the OBD STATUS for DTC P0506 in the DTCs MENU with the Honda PGM Tester or the HDS.

Is it PASSED?


YES - Troubleshooting is complete.n


NO - If it is FAILED, check the A/C system and/or power steering system, then go to 1 and recheck. If it is EXECUTING, keep the condition continually until a result comes on. If it is Out of CONDITION, go to 17 and recheck.
