M/T Differential Backlash Inspection

  1. Install the driveshaft and intermediate shaft into the differential assembly.
  1. Carefully clamp the driveshaft (A) in a vise (B).
  1. Place the intermediate shaft (C) on a V-block (D), then fix the intermediate shaft using a vise or equivalent (E).
  1. Measure the backlash of the final driven gear (F) with a dial indicator (G). When the backlash is not within the standard, check the differential carrier condition, and replace it if necessary.
    Standard (New):
    0.8−1.3 mm (0.031−0.051 in.)
