M/T Reverse Lockout System Circuit Troubleshooting
Driver cannot select the reverse gear when vehicle speed at 15 km/h (9 mph) or less
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  1. Try to shift the transmission into reverse.
Can you shift the transmission into the reverse?
YES -
Go to Step 4 .
NO -
Go to Step 3 .
  1. Do the reverse lockout solenoid test.
Is the reverse lockout solenoid OK?
YES -
Check the change lever assembly, if necessary inspect the internal transmission.■
NO -
Repair or replace the reverse lockout solenoid. ■
  1. Start the engine.
Can you shift the transmission into the reverse?
YES -
Intermittent failure, the system is OK at this time.■
NO -
Go to Step 5 .
  1. Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0).
  1. Jump the SCS line with the HDS.
  1. R20A3 engine model: Disconnect ECM connector A (44P).
  1. K24Z3 engine model: Disconnect ECM connector C (49P).
  1. Disconnect the reverse lockout solenoid 2P connector.
  1. Check for continuity between body ground and reverse lockout solenoid 2P connector terminal No. 1.
Is there continuity?
YES -
Repair short to body ground in the wire between the reverse lockout solenoid and the ECM.■
NO -
  • R20A3 engine model: Check for loose terminals or poor connections at ECM. If necessary, update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck. If the trouble goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM. ■
  • K24Z3 engine model: Check for loose terminals or poor connections at ECM. If necessary, update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck. If the trouble goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM. ■
