Cam Chain Installation

NOTE: Keep the cam chain away from magnetic fields.
  1. Set the crankshaft to top dead center (TDC). Align the TDC mark (A) on the crankshaft sprocket with the pointer (B) on the engine block.

  1. Set the camshaft to TDC. The ‘‘UP'' mark (A) on the camshaft sprocket should be at the top, and the TDC grooves (B) on the camshaft sprocket should line up with the top edge of the head.

  1. Install the cam chain on the crankshaft sprocket with the colored piece (A) aligned with the mark (B) on the crankshaft sprocket.

  1. Install the cam chain on the camshaft sprocket with the colored piece (A) aligned with the mark (B) on the camshaft sprocket.

  1. Install the cam chain guide (A) and the cam chain tensioner arm (B).

  1. Compress the auto-tensioner when replacing the cam chain. Remove the pin from the auto-tensioner. Turn the plate (A) counterclockwise, to release the lock, then press the rod (B), and set the first cam (C) to the first edge of the rack (D). Insert the 1.0 mm (0.04 in.) diameter pin (E) into the holes (F).
NOTE: If the chain tensioner is not set up as described, the tensioner will become damaged.

  1. Install the auto-tensioner.

  1. Remove the pin from the auto-tensioner.
  1. Remove the all of the old liquid gasket from the oil pump mating surfaces, the bolts, and the bolt holes.
  1. Clean and dry the oil pump mating surfaces.

  1. Apply liquid gasket (P/N 08C70-K0234M, 08C70-K0334M, or 08C70-X0331S) to the engine block mating surface of the oil pump and to the inner threads of the bolt holes.
NOTE: Apply liquid gasket about 2.5 mm (0.098 in.) diameter bead along the broken line (A).
  1. Apply liquid gasket to the engine block upper surface contact areas (B) and the lower block upper surface contact areas (C) on the oil pump.
NOTE: Apply about 11 mm (0.43 in.) diameter and about 3 mm (0.12 in.) thickness of liquid gasket to the areas (B) and (C).

  1. Apply liquid gasket (P/N 08C70-K0234M, 08C70-K0334M, or 08C70-X0331S) to the oil pan mating surface of the oil pump.
    NOTE:
    • Apply liquid gasket about 2.5 mm (0.098 in.) diameter bead along the broken line (A).
    • Do not install components if 5 minutes or more have passed after applying the liquid gasket. Instead, remove the old residue and reapply the liquid gasket.

  1. Install the new O-rings (A) on the oil pump. Set the edge of the oil pump (B) to the edge of the oil pan (C), then install the oil pump on the engine block (D). Loosely install the dowel bolts (E), then tighten the 8 mm bolts (F). Tighten the 6 mm bolts (G) and the dowel bolts. Wipe off the excess liquid gasket on the oil pan and the oil pump mating area.
    NOTE:
    • When installing the oil pump, do not slide the bottom surface onto the oil pan mounting surface.
    • Wait at least 30 minutes before filling the engine with oil.
    • Do not run the engine for at least 3 hours after installing the oil pump.

  1. Install the side engine mount bracket (A), and tighten the new bolt and nut (B), then tighten the bolt (C).
  1. Install the ground cable (D).

  1. Install the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose.
  1. Install the splash shield.
  1. Install the front wheels.
