External Paintwork and Panel Corrosion Check

NOTE: The damage must be attributed to either ‘‘in-service'' damage (wear & tear) or manufacturing defect and scheduled for repair with the vehicle owner.
To inspect and record on the check sheet in the service book any damage to external painted surfaces by:
Carry out the corrosion inspection as detailed.
  1. Ensure vehicle is clean and dry.
  1. Position vehicle in a dry well illuminated area.
  1. Examine vehicle external panels and paintwork for damage and defects.
  1. Look for evidence of abnormalities in the painted surface such as blistering or cracking paintwork usually accompanied by a brown staining (steel only) white powdery substance (aluminum only). This type of perforation is rarely found on expansive areas of steel sheet, but might be found where folds and joints trap condensation.
  1. Examine all hemming areas on bonnet, doors and trunk for evidence of corrosion damage. Check also the door window frame to door panel welded areas.
  1. Check painted surfaces for perforation due to corrosion from inside out. Typically where perforation has occurred there are a small external blisters containing brown colored liquid.
  1. If damage is found, the vehicle should be identified as requiring attention, the damage and location on the vehicle recorded.
